I know it’s considered a social media trend but some of us have always tried to make the more mundane things in life a little less mundane. Everyday joys have been a running theme for me for years as I try to prettify (not a word, should be) every single day. I’ve come up with a list of how to romanticise your life every day.
What does ‘how to romanticise your life’ mean?
Celebrating small wins, noticing the beauty around you, having main character energy, becoming ‘that’ girl, and looking for moments of magic in everyday life. Whichever way you say it, all of these phrases basically mean the same thing. We’re talking about looking after ourselves better, feeling good about ourselves, and enjoying every day.
If you’ve seen any of this on social media, you’ll probably notice that it’s not the most diverse crop of influencers promoting this trend. However, I think we can acknowledge it and everyone can reclaim their own version of it. We all have different responsibilities in life but imagine if we could carve out just a little bit of time to make life more enjoyable. I think we can all agree that’s not a bad thing to want. Who doesn’t want to feel happier or more grateful, or have more excitement in their life?
Get yourself some nice sleepwear
Romanticizing your day starts the night before with your pyjamas! Whether you love a satin camisole, cotton button-ups, or a comfy nightdress, buy what makes you feel good but also comfortable! For me, I have all three of the above and just choose what I feel like. Right now, it’s definitely a comfy, long-sleeved set because I freeze in bed. During the summer, I switch to a camisole and matching shorts. And if you like to sleep naked, you do you!
A cosy dressing gown is also a huge must for me (or multiple if you’re like me). The thicker, the better, and always size up. In fact, men’s dressing gowns are much cosier! If you have several dressing gowns, you can always treat yourself to a thinner or slinkier one if you’re a fancy gal!
Sort out your evening routine
Now you’re in your comfies, what will help you wind down even more? What would you like to add to your evening routine? For me, it’s my skincare routine and reading. My routine isn’t complicated but it definitely makes me feel sleepy. I’ll usually start my routine at about half 9.30pm, with an aim for being asleep by 11pm at the latest. That usually depends on how good the book is!
Take your time first thing
I don’t know about you but I love a slow morning, definitely in the winter. If you’re someone who’s rushing about first thing, maybe get up a little earlier or try to prep the night before. Having a slower morning, even if you get just five minutes to yourself, can help to improve your mood. It can start with opening your curtains or blinds, opening the window, and making the bed. Maybe you can journal, meditate, read, or simply just enjoy your hot drink of choice in silence! Even if you can just do this once a week, I’m sure you’ll feel even just 1% better.
Make your breakfast extra special
I’m not someone who eats breakfast but I do romanticize my morning drink. I have a collection of syrups and nice mugs too. Because I don’t drink coffee or tea, my choice of drink in the morning is hot chocolate. I’ve got a milk frother that I use as well as Cadbury’s hot chocolate. The Velvetiser is far too expensive so this is a budget version! Sometimes, I even go all out with marshmallows, whipped cream, sprinkles and chocolate toppings. It feels indulgent but it always brings a smile to my face.
Get ready in style
Put yourself in the right mood when getting ready in the morning. Stick on your favourite playlist or podcast, get yourself a fancy headband to get your hair out of your face, and make it an experience! I’ve got all of my beauty and make-up products organised in a system that works for me as that definitely brings me joy!
Choose clothes you love
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realised that my ‘trendy’ days are far behind me. Instead, I try to focus on wearing what I like, what makes me feel comfortable and confident, and what makes me feel good. Capsule wardrobes are one of the best ways to rediscover your style and focus on curating a wardrobe full of pieces you love. Over time, you can invest in better quality but the idea is wearing what you have. Of course, I still treat myself to new items but try to upgrade from fast fashion. If there is a trend or style you’d like to try, why not buy something second-hand instead? It’s better for the environment and you’ll save money too.
Whilst I do love choosing comfortable pieces, I have recently been discovering that I do miss dressing up. During the pandemic, I got rid of all dresses, skirts and heels from my wardrobe. They were no longer my style or size. Now I’ve hit thirty-two, I’d like to feel sexier and more adult, meaning I’m looking to invest in a new LBD and maybe some high heels.
Make your workday enjoyable
Is there anything small that you can do to improve your workday, whether you work in a shop, office, or from home? Could you get yourself some cute stationery to make writing notes more fun? Can you upgrade your water bottle to something more fancy? How about changing your computer background to something you love? Tiny changes make all the difference!
Make your home cosier
If there’s one way to romanticize your everyday life, it’s to have a home that you love. We’re not talking about decoration as that’s a big job but tiny adjustments, such as new lighting, bedding or photos. Maybe you’re a plant person or adding flowers to your dining table would make you smile. Try to keep it relatively cheap as we just want to enhance the life you have, not change it completely!
Once you’ve got your home feeling more like you, now’s the time to enjoy it! Stroll around in your pyjamas, lingerie or in the nude if you want to! Dance and sing around the house like nobody’s watching. Enjoy your home, whether you love mess or tidiness!
Create a pamper routine
This is something I’ve recently implemented properly and I’ve been wondering why I haven’t started earlier! I do my regular skincare routine most mornings and evenings but how about those extras? Face masks, a hair conditioning treatment, and every other lotion and potion you’ve added to your collection. For me, Sunday evenings are the perfect time to have an ‘extra’ pamper night. Hitting thirty meant I had to start taking my skincare and beauty routines seriously, including regular facials too.
You could also treat yourself to a longer bath, adding candles, a new bath bomb, some mood music or a movie, and shutting the door to the outside world. Personally, I’m more of a shower girlie because it’s quicker but that doesn’t mean you can’t romanticise that either.
Get on top of organisation
One way to stay on top of everything: get organised! You can make it functional but also pretty if you like. I started bullet journalling a couple of years ago, colour-coding my life away to make it pretty. Previously, I’ve been a sticker collector and planned with those instead.
When you’re organised, you can book things in advance, schedule some downtime, and leave plenty of white space. I put everything in my diary: client work, blogging schedule, theatre shows, travel plans, beauty appointments, routines, sports fixtures, exercise routines, and the rest.
Date yourself
One way to take the next step in your life is to be comfortable on your own. Whether you’re single or not, spending time alone is a great way to get to know yourself better. Personally, I like to take myself out of the house for a solo date once a fortnight. It might be going to the cinema, a cafe, or just a long walk, but make it something fun. When you do something alone, it feels more indulgent! Love yourself the most before anyone else!
Whilst I do like to work out of the house once a fortnight, it can be a great time to unplug. Of course, if you’re a woman, definitely still take your phone (safety first), but why not read a book from a cafe or restaurant instead?
Appreciate what you already have
Expressing gratitude whilst wanting to improve yourself doesn’t have to be the complete opposite. In fact, if you’re appreciative, it works out for both. That’s why I love journaling. Every morning, I write three things I’m looking forward to that day. That’s all I do and it’s a nice way to set myself up for the day.
Slow down
The key to romanticising your life is simplifying it. Obviously, there are things we have to do, such as work, health, family, friends, and household stuff. I’m sure most of us will have been through burnout, a bit of a funk, or have at least been close to it. The older you get, the less likely you will bounce back straight away when you’re overworked.
Slowing down means prioritising yourself and what you want, looking after yourself properly, and trying to find some balance in your life. It often means living more minimalistic too, keeping only possessions that you want and need.
Find your thing
Whether it’s a hobby or just something you enjoy doing, find something that makes you happy. It’s something that I’ve always enjoyed but obviously, as you get older, you have less time for it. My hobbies aren’t anything extraordinary but they don’t have to be. Reading, watching TV/YouTube, dancing, working out, baking, cooking, blogging, organising, theatre, and journalling are all hobbies of mine right now!
Using these 14 ways on how to romanticise your life can improve your well-being. It’s important to do these things because you want to, not because it’s trending on TikTok. The beauty is that you can personalise everything to fit into your life.
